Prof. Neil Geoffrey Turok



Prof. Neil Geoffrey Turok is, since 2008, the Director of Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, in Waterloo, Canada. He holds a PhD Degree in theoretical physics from Imperial College, London, UK. After a postdoctoral post at Santa Barbara, he was an associate scientist at Fermilab, Chicago, USA. In 1992 he was awarded the Maxwell medal of the Institute of Physics for his contributions to theoretical physics. In 1994 he was appointed Professor of Physics at Princeton University, then held the Chair of Mathematical Physics at the University of Cambridge starting in 1997. He is the founder of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences for which he received the 2008 TED Prize.  In 2010, Turok received a prize from the World Innovation Summit for Education. Prof. Turok is also the Founder of the Next Einstein Initiative. In 2015, he played a key role in moving the AIMS’ headquarters in Kigali, Rwanda, where a new AIMS center was also launched in 2016. Prof. Turok has, in partnership with Government of Rwanda, initiated the project of developing a Quantum Leap Research Center in Rwanda for the advancement of next-generation research in quantum sciences in Africa.

Our core mission is to provide strategic advices and recommendations to the Government on all matters relating to policies, legislation and regulation in the fields of science, technology, research and innovation and monitor the implementation of such policies and legislation. It also mandated to mobilise the National Research and Innovation Fund to facilitate Researchers and Innovators
